gaNapathi gAnam

VINAI THEERKKUM VINAYAKAN
Lord Ganesha otherwise called Vinayakan, is the foremost God for Hindhus. It is said that the esthetic form of Vinayaka is the reason for the very creation of this Universe. HE is the foremost of all the other Forms of Almighty, whom Hindhus pray before starting any work or any pooja even! He is called 'vigna vinAyakan' which means, "the one and the only leader (nAyakan) who destroys all the 'vigna' (impediments) which comes in between". HE is the one who nullifies(theerkkum) all the results of one's evil deeds (vinai). HE is "vinai theerkkum vinAyakan" !

The purpose of this Blog is to make you all enjoy some melodious songs from all languages, on Lord Ganesha !

1. TAMIL
Given below is the youtube link for a very melodious Tamil song on HIM, sung by Sri SEERKAZHI GOVINDHARJAN. The song is set in Raga NAATTAI . Please enjoy!

2. SANSKRIT
"sankata nAsana gaNapahi sthOthram" :
The meaning of the above is,"A Praise on GANAPATHI who destroys all the sufferings". The verses can be heard here !

3. MARATHI

Next comes a very melodious song in Marathi in praise of Lord Ganapathi! Both the singers have poured out their devotion to God and that is why it is so very melodious! The song is set to Rag YAMAN (In Carnatic it is said 'Yamuna Kalyani').

Pratham Tula Vandito (Ganpati song)

4. KANNADA
This is a song by the great "PURANDHARA DASARAU" on Lord Ganesha . You will be hearing this sung by Bagyalakshmi Suresh and Jayashree Ramanathan. Traditionally this is sung in the Raga "Saurashtram", but here you will enjoy the song, very beautifully rendered in the Raga "Hameer Kalyani" !

5. TELUGU

Though there are so many carnatic krithis in Telugu by Thyagaiah, I am posting here a popular and melodious devotional song in Telugu, in praise of Lord Ganesha.

"Vinayaka Nee Murthike Ma Modhati Pranamam"

6. GUJARATHI:

Here goes a very melodious and pious filled Ganesh Bhajan in Gujarathi sung by PARAS BORKHATRIA . It sounds like Raga "Valachi" of Carnatic Music! Only experts should clarify the Raga! Please enjoy the song !

7. MALAYALAM:

Now comes a beautiful song by Jayachandran in Malayalam on Lord Vigneshwara ! This is again in the Raga NATTAI. It starts with lyrics meaning "Oh,Lord Vigneshwara, I came in front of you to break the Cocanut, ideally my life itself, as an offering at your Lotus Feet. Please accept" !
Vigneswara Janma Nalikeram - PUSHPANJALI

8. HINDI

gaNpati vandhanA - Hari Om Sharan
Hari Om Sharan, a famous Bhajan singer has rendered this song in praise of Ganapati wonderfully, with full of devotion. Very enjoyable one! I presume this to be set in Raag DESH ! The lyrics are also given in the video which would enable a sing along!

Let me end this with a composition of my own written in Tamil, which is set to raga Hamsadhwani !

ராகம்: ஹம்ஸத்வனி பாடல்: பாலாஜி

கஜமுகனை வேண்டினேன்
கணம் கணம் நினைந்துருகும்
மனங்களில் நினைந்தருளும் (கஜமுகனை)

PAPANASAM SIVAN's "SRI RAMA CHARITHA GEETHAM "

"SRI RAMA CHARITHA GEETHAM"

"SRI RAMA CHARITHA GEETHAM"

PAPANASAM SIVAN, a great composer of Tamil devotional songs, has composed about 2000 songs in Tamil and also three long Drama Songs, one of which is "SRI RAMA CHARITHA GEETHAM". His lyrics are known for the simplicity of the language, which one can find in this wonderful song of his also. This has been sung by Seerkazhi Govindharajan in his meritorious, rich voice! The song as such is very melodious, sung in different ragas! Please Click the following link to enjoy "Ramachritha Geetham"

https://youtu.be/Y73nSpf3VyA

"sri rama jaya rama jaya jaya rama"

Papanasam Sivan ! Popular Sivan!

PAPANASAM SIVAN was a famous composer of Tamil devotional songs of yester years! His songs are very simple but very impressive and meaningful. The lyrics themselves are very rhythmic and filled with full of devotion to the Almighty. On hearing the songs one would feel that the very birth of the song should have been in that particular raga only! With that much of devotion and involvement the songs have been composed! The simplicity of the language is the one which would attract the audience (even though the language was 'manipravALam',meaning a mixture of tamil and a little bit of sanskrit)! Sivan was known as 'Tamil Thyagaiah' (Thyagaiah is none other than Sri Thyagaraja who was the father of Carnatic Music, whose compositions were in Telugu!)

He was born on 26th September 1890 and lived his full years, upto 92. He hails from Tanjore District in Tamilnadu, a place very well-known for nourishing Carnatic Music! His original name was Ramiah. Ramiah adoring himself full with the 'bhasmam'(Vibhuthi) all over his body like Lord Shiva and living in Papanasam, came to be called as "Papanasam Sivan"!
Later years, he became more popular by his songs sung by M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in movies, in his meritorious voice! Many of his devotional songs were popularised by the veteran carnatic musicians like D.K.Pattammal, M.S.Subbulakshmi, and M.L.Vasanthakumari! I can not forget the song 'nAn oru viLayAttu bommayA' in raga "navarasa kAnadA", very much popularised by D.K.Pattammal! Just for reference, the lyrics of the song are given below, which is followed by video of the song:

Pallavi :
nAnoru viLayATTu bommaiyA? jagan
nAyakiyE umaiyE undanukku (nAnoru)

Anupallavi :
nAnilattil pala piRavi eDuthu
thiNDADinadu pOdhAdhA? dEvi undanukku (nAnoru)

CharaNam:
aruLamudaip paruga ammA ammA enRu
alaRuvadaik kETpadhAnandhamA?
oru pugal inRi un tiruvaDi aDaindEnE
thiruvuLam irangAdhA? dEvi undanukku (nAnoru)

Given down is a youtube link by clicking which you can enjoy Smt.D.K.PATTAMMAL singing the above song !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohAFxm-9Sng

The same song by the present day's singer NITHYASHREE MAHADHEVAN (Grand Daughter of Smt.D.K.Pattammal) also is given here just for a change/comparison !

Sivan himself was a good singer! I still remember the time he used to walk around the Mylapore Tank singing Bhajans with his group in the very early mornings during the month of "Maragazhi" (December 14 to January 13)!

Papanasam Sivan has composed over 2000 songs in both carnatic music and film songs. His compositions include varnams, kritis, operas and all types of compositions typically rendered in a concert. He has composed 2 operas viz., Sri Rama Charitha Geetham & Kaaraikkal Ammaiyar. Sri Rama Charitha Geetham is a raga-malika of 24 ragas. I remember having heard Sri Rama Charitha Geetham in the voice of Seerkali Govindarajan, in a cassette form. Though simple, very very impressive lines!
(One can enjoy this song posted separately in my blog "Papanasam Sivan's SRI RAMACHARITHA GEETHAM" !)

Another example for his simple language but at the same time being elegant, impressive and devotional, is the song "enna thavam seidhanai" in KAPI raga! After the lyrics given below, you may please enjoy the song wonderfully rendered in a very elaborate and explicit manner by Sri.Sampagodu S Vighnaraja in one of his concerts in Kaulalumpur !
ENNA THAVAM SHEIDHANAI !

Pallavi :

enna tavam sheidanai yasOdhA
engum nirai parabhrammam ammAvenr-azhaikka
(enna thavam)

Anupallavi:

IrEzu bhuvanangaL paDaiTHavanai
kaiyil Endhi shIrATTi pAlUTi thAlATTa nI
(enna thavam)

CharaNam 1:

bhramanum indhranum manadhil porAmai koLLa
uralil kaTTi vAi potthik-kenjavaiTHAi kaNanai
uralil kaTTi vAi potthik-kenjavaiTHAi thAyE
(enna thavam)

CharaNam 2:

sanakAdhiyar thava yOgam sheidhu varundi
sAdhiTHadhai punidha mAdhE nee eLidhil peRa
(enna tavam)

Yet another speciality of his songs used in old tamil movies are that a learner can very easily learn the form of a particular raga from any song. Of course, some songs are in Ragamalika! Some of his simple famous songs in popular ragas are given below:

CHENCHURUTI "rAdhe unakku kOpam AgAthadi" from CHINTHAMANI
"annaiyum thanthaiyum thAne" from HARIDHAS
"vaLLalai pAdum vAyAl" from SIVAKAVI
BHAIRAVAI "unnai kaNdu mayangAdha" from ASHOK KUMAR
PANTHUVARALI "ambA manam kaninthunathu" from SIVAKAVI
SINDHU BHAIRAVI "bhUmiyil mAnida janmam" from ASHOK KUMAR
BEHAG "dheena karuNAkaranE" from THIRUNEELAKANTAR
KAAPI "dhyAnamE en manathu" from ASHOK KUMAR
JONPURI "gnAnak kaN onRu" from CHINTHAMANI
"sathva guNa bhOdhan" from ASHOK KUMAR

The following link gives wonderful details of the songs of Sivan used in so many films:

http://www.tamilnation.org/culture/music/mkt.htm

"bhUmiyil mAnida janmam adaindhumOr", a melodious and a very meaningful song can be heard here. Speciality of this video is that the images presented also are very apt and very much relate to the meanings of the lyrics! something different! Please click and see !

Some of his other popular devotional songs which are still being sung by musicians in their kutcheris, are given below for reference.

SRI RANJANI "gajavadhana karuna sadhana"
DHANYASI "bAlakrishnan padhamalar"
MOHANAM "Kapali,karuNai nilavu pozhi"
KHARAHARAPRIYA "dhayavillayadhayala"
VARALI "kA vA vA, murugA vA vA"
VASANTHA "mAlmaruga shanmukha"
THODI "kArthikEya kAngEya gowri thanayA"
KAMBHOJI "kANna kaNkOti vENdum"
VACHASPATHI "parAthparA paramEshwara"
MADHYAMAVATHI "kaRpagamE kaNpArAi"
SHANMUKHAPRIYA "sharavana bhava enum thirumandhiram"
SAHANA "sri vathApi gaNapathiyE"
HAMSANANDHI "srInivAsa thiruvEnkatmudaiyan"

In the era of Carnatic Music, at one stage it was questioned as to why only krithis of other languages, namely Telugu and Sanskrit should be taken and why not Tamil! Later, musicians slowly started singing Tamil songs during their performances. Songs from "Rama kAthai" of Arunachalakkavirayar, Songs of Mahakavi Bharathiar,Bharathidhasan,Oothukkadu Venkatasubbhiar, and those of so many composers inculding those of Papanasam Sivan were popularised by musicians. We have to mention time and again that the lyrics of Papanasam Sivan are that simple to enjor and to practice the same in popular ragas. Let me end this with another musical note of Papanasam Sivan ! You may please enjoy here the song "kaNNanai paNi manamE" in raga SHANMUKKHAPRIYA, in the melodious voice of K.S.Chithra ! Please click the following link!

Mind is NOT a Monkey!

People say 'Mind is a Monkey" ! I hardly accept it! Mind has got to have some control even to keep quiet (meaning, without involving itself into any physical actions)! Even at that time it can not act cranky ! It will defenitely produce! Mind is compared to Monkey for cranky behaviours! But my point is that monkey does not behave cranky as far as its mind is concerned. If we are not able to read the mind of a monkey, well, it is not its fault and we are at fault! For behaving in any particular manner, monkey does use its brain and reacts as per its formulae! Results are defenitely produced and the proceeds are for the the satisfaction of the monkey, and it may not suit our need, which does not warrant to say that monkey behaves cranky! Similarly, human minds also work according to the needs of a particular human being, on a particular concept, at a particular point. The way one person's mind works need not be upto what the other expects, but the results are produced as per that person's need!

Ultimately, it proves that the saying 'Mind is a Monkey' can not be taken as a perfect one!

Pathi, Patni Aur Woh Bechare Bachche !

"PATI,PATNI aur WOH"

Most of us would not be missing the above serial in Hindi, that is being relayed in Imagine TV everyday!

It used to amuse me so much when I used to see the teaser clip of Rakhi saying "jaan bhoojkar ye bachche mujhe kyun dhiya, jo sOtha hi nahi", with a very frustrated look and expression! Although I did not like the first serial "Rakhi ka Swayamvar" which is continued by the present one, the teaser clippings for the present one used to amuse me, and my wife used to call me to see the same whenever it was relayed. Somehow I got into the habit of seeing this serial regularly, but since late I was cursing myself for the same, because some of the scenes irritated me so much !

The serial goes like this! All the four couples who got married, are sent to a Farm-house, in a very nice place out of the City. Purpose is that they should get to know what is married life and how to lead their life harmoniously when they get a child! The Idea seems to be very good, but for one thing ! For the purpose of experiencing the nuances of pregnancy, rather, the burden of a mother bearing a child, the heroines are tied to their stomach with a heavy baggage like weight weighing about 15/20 kg ! They have to carry the weight and act as though they are carrying a child!, feel as though the child is growing in their stomach, keep teasing their husbands and make them do all the household jobs, etc. etc! The very scenes used to irritate me so much! The expressions of the so called 'mothers',about the heaviness of bearing and all, I feel, would scar any viewer who is yet to bear a child! MOTHERHOOD is a feeling which is to be experienced and enjoyed, which can not be practiced beforehand! This particular aspect of the show is a real "MOCKERY ON MOTHERHOOD" !

Then, they would act as though they gave birth to a child and one of them to a twin ! For this purpose, small children are given to them for handling and the original parents of the children would be seeing from the next room, the scenes of their children being reared! IT IS ACTUALLY A TORTURE for the children, I used to feel ! The original parents make the children act in the serial for the sake of money!! The real mother intervenes during the scenes and cries for the way the children are being handled ! Ridiculous it is I felt! I don't know what sort of a parents they would be, who allows such a torture the children like this ! In any case, in their real life, may be, they would have to leave the children at a creech in the near future! They probably would feel that they have started this a bit early! All for the sake of money!

Those days, when my children used to be very small, I never used to take them to any cinema hall, exhibition etc, just for the reason that they should not get crushed in crowd, at least up to the age of three or four. Naturally, for a person of such temperament these scenes in TV serial would definitely look a real TORTURE !

Now, in the serials, small children have gone back home with their parents and a little grown up ones are expected to come today for staying with the couple ! Commercialism is going to dogs, touching the peaks of illogicality and incredibility!

Nevertheless, seeing it from a positive angle, we should say that there are definitely scenes which teach how to handle small children, how the couple should co-operate with each other in leading their life, etc etc. Liter side of married life shown are encouraging! The concept of give and take is clearly brought out! The show definitely would make some of the viewers feel that they themselves are living examples! The fact that a new concept as such has been brought out for the viewers, is to be very much appreciated !

Just as a sample, one of the episodes can be seen in the following video !

HAPPY VIEWING !!!

FAITH MATTERS MORE !

FAITH is what keeps us going! FAITH is the base of a Positive outlook ! The word FAITH need not necessarily relate to any so called religious concept. It is the basic confidence one has on one's own self, - a little more of the word 'self-confidence', I would say ! If one has got that confidence, the FAITH which he has, would definitely  lead him to the right path always !

FAITH LEADS TO LIGHT! The word "LIGHT" here does not men light in its literary sense! It means 'ENLIGHTENMENT', What does "Enlightenment" means? It means "Self-
Realization" which in its real sense,to realize what the 'SELF' is. One may say that the general EGO is "Self". This may be correct in the first step of the process of getting into the search of 'Self'. Ultimately 'Self' might prove something else, the quantum of which would be different for different persons. One has to experience realizing this, which can not be explained in words! But if one's FAITH is strong, it will lead him to LIGHT ultimately! These lines of meanings are given in the broader sense of the word. If we take it in the lighter sense also, it will be correct. If we apply the concept "Faith leads to Light", in the lighter sense of our day-to-day activities also, it will mean a lot to us. Unless one is confident of what he has in mind, he will not reach his goal. When one fees he is in dark, in difficulties, his Faith or his Confidence leads him to light!

I am reminded of what my dad used to advice always: 'Surrender all your thoughts, or even worries you have, to your ultimate Faith. Keep confidence and be care-free!  You will definitely see wonders happening! But one thing - once given them off, never take back the worries back on your shoulders, which would not do anything better for you! Take this as it comes and enjoy your present minute".  These words have been leading me till date!

"YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE! " - MOTHER

"You get what you deserve"

Human wants are unlimited ! In this material world, we desire for humpteen things! Do we get what all we want, and more to say, do we get it instantaneously-at that particular moment itself when we want it? No! It is very rare to get like that!

Desire for anything, but do not be in a haste to get it. Wait for the correct moment, till you get it and enjoy it at the time you get it. Not only enjoying it, but see if what you get be of any use to others! That is most important!

To aspire for any achievement-any big thing in life is not wrong, but to surrender it the moment you get it to the PROVIDER with full heart is a Great thing! What you get may not be some times what you wanted; but if you have the capacity to accept it with full heart, it will really make you live in Peace !

What all you get is not provided to you because you wanted it, but because it is felt that you DESERVED it.

"YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE"

It does not mean that you should boast yourself or feel proud that you have deserved that high a prize! To accept it without any ego and to live with it like that, is what is required of you ! To do your best to others with what you get is what is required of you !

A SMILE MAKES THE OTHER SMILE, SO SMILE !

Just a SMILE brings life to the whole atmosphere and that is the magic of SMILE ! It really creates wonders ! A face loses its charm without a SMILE in it !

Imagine that you are going to attend an interview. Your entering the interview hall with a smiling face would generate positive feeling all over and within yourself also, which would help you handle the situation nicely and come out successfully with the interview !

Imagine that you are going to meet a client to sell a product of your Company . Your entering the place with a smiling face would defenitely ease the client's moods which would in turn make your job easy to get the business ! SMILE COSTS NOTHING !

We have to learn this habit from Children ! They always have a smiling face only. When you see the smiling face of a child, you forget all your worries and you also smile !

We are born in this world, not for worrying ourselves on anything, thereby making others also worry ! Each one is born in this world with a mission , with a purpose to fulfill.. But every one of us spend at least half of our life time without finding out the purpose. We have to search for the purpose which is not anywhere outside, but lies within ourselves. Let us search for that with a SMILE, easen our job and come out successfully !
